Local Traditions

New Year’s Day Swim

Discover local traditions such as the ‘New Year’s Day Swim,’ where brave souls dip in the chilly sea to welcome the new year.

St Tibb’s Eve

There are many traditions apart from the extremes of a chilly dip; as an example, another is St Tibb’s Eve.

The expression “Saint Tibb’s Eve” is recorded in Cornwall, meaning “a day which never comes”.

There is one saint whose name is familiar to all in Cornwall but whose sex is unknown.

This saint has much to answer for; promises made but never intended to be kept are all to be fulfilled on next St. Tibb’s eve, a day that some folks say “falls between the old and new year”; others describe it as one that comes “neither before nor after Christmas”.

In Cornwall, the fleeting moment between 11.59 pm on New Year’s Eve and the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Day, affectionately known as “St. Tibb’s Eve,” is a hidden day reserved for magical celebrations.

First Footing/Sanding the Step

The tradition of “first footing” is a worldwide custom, often linked to the belief that the first person to enter a home in the New Year brings with them good luck. In Cornwall, a unique twist on this tradition is known as “sanding the step.”

During this ritual, the doorstep is meticulously swept to remove any symbolic “fleas” and then marked with a line of sand.

As with first footing, the individual who steps across this sandy threshold is thought to symbolise the fortune the household will receive in the upcoming year.

Some families enhance this tradition by gifting small tokens, typically silver in colour, which are believed to usher in financial prosperity for the year ahead.

Fancy Dress Gatherings

St Ives and Looe are renowned for their lively New Year’s Eve celebrations, especially their extravagant fancy-dress gatherings.

In St Ives, this tradition originally stemmed from the annual Old Cornwall Society guise dance parade.

During this event, hundreds of participants don ornate masks and costumes to obscure their identities, sometimes even altering their voices, creating an air of mystery and excitement as revellers try to guess one another’s true identities.
